This installation guide uses an iPhone 4(GSM) as demonstration unit.
The iPhone 4S requires the same steps but it’s parts placement are different which will be further explained in the demonstration video.
You are advised to wait for our video demo if you are unsure what you need to do.
The reason why we delayed the demo video is because we find that just the demo video is not enough to explain the details hence we need to post out this installation guide in pictures first before posting the video for your better understanding and higher chance of success !
 |
| Step 9
-Before you start connecting the red cable to the “connecting point”, use your finger to press down back the power cable that you unplugged during Step3.
-Make sure the small metal piece below the shield is in correct position before you press the shield down.
-Screw back the screw you unscrewed earlier on. Make sure you use the correct screw! Every single screw is of different size and length.
-This step will give back the power to your iPhone so that you can test the light panel properly during the installation on next step onwards.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 10
-Use the forcep or your fingers and place the red cable in between the 2 sockets that you have just lifted up.
-Have the “Z” end of the red cable that you pinched sit on top of the “connecting point”
-If you find that the “Z” end that you pinched does not rest nicely on the “connecting point” please pull the red cable out gently and pinch it again. This is very important as it will save you alot of time and work if you do this right.
-Use your focep and press down the red cable so that it sticks onto the 3M double tape. This will prevent the red cable from further moving about.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 11
-Please make sure your red cable still sits on the 3M double tape and the “Z” end rest ontop of the “connecting point” touching it.
-Use your scissor to cut another new pc of small 3M double tape of size: 0.6cm x 0.2cm
-Use the forcep to hold the cut 3M tape and place gently on top of the very end of the red cable. This will help hold the “Z” to stay connected with the “connecting point”
-While applying the new 3M double tape, please ensure the cut piece doesn’t block the “metal lock” of top of the connecting point and the screw mount on it’s right else it will prevent your back panel from sliding into position. (see the red arrows) Please remember to peel off the white paper of the 3M tape.
-Joint back the 2 lifted sockets by pressing it back down gently one by one.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 12
-Switch on your iPhone now to test the light panel. It’s normal that if your light panel doesn’t lit up now.
-Now use your finger to hold the very end of the bronze cable and let it touch the metal sides of iPhone.
-Use the forcep that you are holding and press gently on the 3M double tape that sits ontop of the “Z” end of the red cable.
-The light panel should lit up now while the bronze cable end touches the metal sides and you pressing gently on the end of the red cable underneath the 3M double tape at the same time. (also remember to on your iPhone by pressing the Home button)
-This step is crucial, if your light panel does’nt lit up, there are 2 possible reasons:
1. the red cable end is not well pinched to form a “Z” shape or it’s not resting on the “connecting point”
2. the metal end of the bronze cable is not touching the sides of the iPhone while you are testing the light panel to lit up.
-If it’s not the 2nd reason, you probably need to redo step 8, 10 and 11.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 13
-This step requires a little creativity. We need to add something thick enough on top of the new piece of 3M double tape you just applied so that it has something to exert pressure on the “Z” end of the red cable when you install back the metal shield.
-The fastest easiest way we can think of is to use the remaining of the 3M double tape you have (you are recommended to reserve at least 1 cm of it just in case.) and row it into a long “tube” and fold in into half and pinch it so that it sticks together.
-After that use your forcep to hold the “tube” and place it just above the “connecting point”. The “tube” should be placed upright forming a natural “V shape spring”
-Test the light panel again by allowing the bronze cable end touches the metal sides and you pressing gently on the “tube” at the same time. (also remember to on your iPhone by pressing the Home button)
-If the light panel lits up again, you are safe. If not, the “Z” end of the red cable may have moved away from the “connecting point” and you will need to redo step 10 and 11 again.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 14
-This step is optional. You will only need to do this step if the “tube” that you made is not thick enough to exert pressure on the red cable end onto the connecting point after you install back the shield.
-You can always use the black single sided soft tape, cut a very small pc from it approx. 0.1cm x 0.2cm and paste it on top of the “tube” you made to add more thickness to it.
-After that install back the metal shield shown in next step onwards.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 15
-After you are sure that the light panel lit up as instructed in previous steps, you are safe to carry on.
-Before you install back the EMI Shield, Completely Off your iPhone first. This will prevent your iPhone from black out (if you already encountered this problem, simply remove the EMI Shield and Reboot your iPhone.) Same goes to 4S installation.
-Install back the metal shield by having it’s most left side inserted first and matches the screw mount.
-Place the whole metal shield into position flat and test the light panel again to see if it’s light up. (also remember to on your iPhone by pressing the Home button)
-Screw back the 5 screws so that the metal shield holds down firmly exerting enough pressure on to the “tube” and the “Z” end of the red cable.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 16
-This step requires you to hook the end of the bronze cable to the top-right screw of the iPhone.
-Before you proceed, please make sure the light panel is facing up. You can counter check on this by making sure that the red cable is always on the right-hand side and the bronze cable on the left.
-Unscrew a little the top right screw on the iPhone (unscrew half of it) if you got shaky hands, use one of the screwdriver to push the “hook” end of the bronze cable underneath the screw while your the other hand holding the philip head screw driver to fastern up the screw. Please no not screw too tight or else the metal end of the cable will be forced out of place.
-At this point, when you on your iPhone, the light panel should lit up.
-If at any point of time you find your iPhone not responsive, you will need to soft reset your iPhone by holding the power button and the home button at the same time for at least 5 secs untill you see it reboot. Everything will be back to normal once it reboot. |
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
| Step 17
-This step is the easiest of all after all the tedious work.
-Use a good scissor and cut 4 pcs of tapes out from the black single sided soft tape each measure 0.1cm x 3cm.
-Place the light panel on top of the battery so that it sits next to the screw (see the blue arrows) and below the gap between the battery and the metal shield plate (see the blue arrows).
-Use one of the cut tape piece and apply below the light panel (in line with the light panel)
-Before you apply the other 3 tapes, you can try taking out our back panel and place it over the iPhone to check if the light panel is in correct postion.
-Tips: You can use some remaining 3M double tape to stick at the back of the light panel so that it doesn’t move around.
-After that, do the same for the other 3 sides so that it will completely surround the light panel.
-Tips: while you apply the tape, you can make use of it to align and tidy up the cables so it doesn’t look too messy.
-The surrounding tapes will help to position the light panel and to prevent light bleed.
-REMINDER: there’s a thin layer of protective film on top of the light panel. You need to remove it before proceeding to next step.
|
|
|
 |
| Step 18
-Take out our specially made back panel for the light mod.
-Remove the blue layer of protective film behind the logo.
-Remove the transaparent layer of protective film at front.
-If you see any protective film at the front or back of the camera lens cover, please remove it as well.
-If you accidentally touches the camera lens, you can always use a cotton bud or a clean fine cloth soaked wet with alcohol and cleanse it gently with minimal pressure.
-Cover the back panel onto the iPhone and slid it in gently. If you face difficulty sliding the back panel in, please check that you didn’t place the light panel too high, as it will block the back panel.
-Screw back the 2 screws underneath the iPhone and you are done!

Can you help me, after installation, my camera doesn't work. In the screen only show the initial camera shutter & it close. So no picture shown the in screen.
If you have a 4S there's a connection for the camera. make sure it's fully seated.
Can we get a close up picture of the "connection point" for the 4S? I'm pretty sure I've got the right 'resister', but I can't seem to get the light panel to work.
(>_<)
when testing the light panel, did you also press the brown wire firmly against the metal frame? It worked for me.
Done! The light looks great, but my proximity & the light sensors stopped working. Is there anyone experiencing the same problem?
I have reconnected the cable/bus multiple times, hard reboot, and still no luck.
It is weird cause because everything else works, including the front camera. I didn't imagine installing the mod could risk breaking the front optical sensors.
help please!
I have same problem, my proximity & the light stopped working...too
I have too reconnected the cable/bus multiple times, hard reboot, and still no luck.
Please help me!
Any chance you could state which phone you're on that you have this issue? I'm on an iPhone 4 and haven't seen this myself so I'm curious if it's just 4S people or not. I'd probably check that those two connectors you opened up to place the wire are firmly connected and that there is no tape on those "golden rods" since those connections are related to the prox sensor, if I'm remembering iFixIt right.
Same here. I am using an iPhone 4 GSM. NOT an iPhone 4S. Please help. The proximity sensor is essential to the phone working properly. Thanks.
Thanks KO, I really appreciate the mod, it looks great.
However, I find the light stays on for about 30 seconds on my iPhone 4, then shuts off. From what I read, it's typically 15 seconds. Also, when it is plugged in, the light stays on, even if the phone is turned off (it flickers just as the phone is turned off, but stays on).
I think this is normal behavior; same is true of mine.
The front of my screen doesn't work now. the mod works but the front has blue streaks and i can't see anything on my phone...
So, I had this issue myself and it appears to be due to accidentally cracking the screen. Essentially, because I didn't take the battery out, it became hard to take the shield out later on and I think I forced it a little to hard when I was getting it out and cracked the back of the LED display. If you're having this issue, you'll essentially see multicolor vertical streaks (mostly blue for me), the phone will still respond to touch events and all (since the digitizer wasn't harmed). If you encounter this issue, your only option is to replace the front display. They cost about $35-40 on eBay, though there are some non-Apple approved repair shops that can do it for around $90 depending on where you live.
Could you please upload ONE picture of the iPhone 4S "connecting point"? Everything else is perfect...
Thank you,
Raju
+1 (310) 400-0001
I've followed the instructions but the light panel doesn't light up. I'm pretty sure the connections are right.
Is there another way to check if the panel if faulty?
If you connect 3-3.5vdc to check whether the light panel light up.
My proximity & the light sensors stopped working :(
Is everyone's light panel even on the light? My light panel is much brighter at the top than the bottom. All of the pictures on this site makes it look like it is perfectly even. Also, mine stays on all the time when plugged in. I am a bit concerned about this.
Does anyone know if the "connecting point" is a resistor or capacitor? It looks like a resistor to me but I don't have my tools to confirm. Is the wire only supposed to connect to one side of the connecting point or lay on top? I am following the directions and laying it on top but I am concerned I might be shorting out an important part of the iphone although everything is working except for my two nits above. (not even and stays on longer than the screen)
My light panel is brighter at the bottom too.
I read that it should be even distributed light though...
hi,
everything is great the light is great i have no problems with the camera or proximity sensor, the only problem i have is that the light stays on so long after the screen has turned off. i noticed sometimes itll stay on for 15seconds after to up to 5 minutes after, why is that? please help thanks.
I've noticed that the time it stays on seems to vary (most likely due to the electric demands in that section of the phone). The mod is drawing electricity from the phone in a way it wasn't exactly intended to be; the panel lights up when there is any electricity there, so I'm not sure there is any way around this (unless a better point for connection is found that better corresponds to when the LED backlight is on.
That said, I haven't seen it stay on for more than 30 seconds or so yet.
My iPhone 4S is having issues.
The light won't turn off, I have reinstalled it multiple times and reset the phone as well.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks!
Guys, the proximity sensor does not shut the screen off during a call now. I would not have purchased this if I knew this was going to happen. Please respond.
Two more things, as stated above the backlight is very uneven, half of the apple logo is brighter than the other side. Also, the light is turning on and off all my itself with no input. I'm not getting texts or emails, the light just turns on for no reason. This was quite an expensive item to have all of these flaws.
Out of curiosity, what model of the iPhone do you have? I've performed the mod as well and haven't had issues with the proximity sensor, but I'm on 4 so I'm curious if people on the 4S are having more issues or not. First thing to check if the proximity sensors are not working is that your properly connected back those connectors that you opened up to place down the wire for the panel (since those connectors are related to the proximity and light sensors). It may be the connection wasn't firmly reconnected or that there may be some tape that got into the connection (the golden rods). If I'm not mistaken, the mod is pretty much trying to draw electricity from the proximity sensor area of the phone, so if you're having issues even after checking those two connection points, I'd advise that you disconnect the panel, see if the problem goes away, and if it does, try to reconnect it and make sure the wire is only touching the connecting point the instructions point out. Anyways, the backlight, by the way it is made, is not going to ever be completely even (despite what the seller might say) due to the fact there is one light and it's that film that is "evenly" distributing the light. I would HEAVILY advise people who this bothers to try and make it so that the place where the light is emitting from (should be slightly under where the wires are) is aligned with where the apple is bitten (so, your wires from the panel will be coming off the panel towards the right hand side of the phone when you have it open; for me, this seemed the most visually appealing option.
I'm on an iPhone 4, and I have fully removed the light panel and backplate. The proximity sensor still does not work. I've reattached the connectors 5 times. Something is messed up here. I'm not happy.
So I saw a comment on the 4S video that implies that people should insulate the left post of the connection point and only connect to the right post on the connection point and that if you lay the red cable over both, you'll short the proximity sensor. Given that these instructions don't give this info, I'd advise you to try and contact K.O.Gadget (if it wasn't clear, I'm just a fellow mod purchaser like you).
For those of you who are experiencing the sensor problems, could you check your "8-dots" are still intact? The 8 dots are actually 4 surface mount resistors. I have replaced the sensors on my phone, and I still can't get it to work. I suspect the fault is on the motherboard. I compared my 8dots to other iphones' and found that some of the solders are gone. This probably happened in the process of placing/removing the 3M tap which caused a damage to the logic board. I like to hear from you guys. Thanks
So, I did this mod on my iPhone 4 and thought I'd put some of my experiences here:
1) If you're worried about harming your phone in any way, I'd advise you don't do this yourself and would discourage you from the mod. I broke my screen on my first attempt due to inexperience at removing the shield. This mod can be done right and safely, but this is a mod and by its very nature, you could end up screwing up your phone if you're not extra super careful.
2) Be aware of the limitations of the mod. The mod is claimed to be able to shut the panel off in certain amount of time, but I've found it can vary a bit (again, this is due to the fact you're sucking electricity off of the phone in a way it wasn't intended to be; the panel doesn't have a control to turn on and off, it turns on when there is electricity running through it - plain and simple). Additionally, the panel isn't quite evenly illuminated, but is close enough for me. If this bothers you, I'd advise that you aim to get the brighter sections of the panel aimed to be coming from the bite in the apple since found this most visually appealing; this can be done by pointing the wires to be coming out of the panel to the right of your phone if you have it open.
3) One thing I would heavily advise everyone trying this is to fully remove the battery from the iPhone before removing or putting the shield on or taking it off. I found it made removing the shield much easier (which was one of my largest difficulties).
4) With the shield, IF YOU HAVE TO FORCE IT, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, SO STOP! I can't stress this enough. I didn't think I was using that much force when removing the shield, but I accidentally cracked my LED display. Remove the battery from the iPhone before removing the shield, this'll give you room to get at the shield and the hinges and just make your life easier.
5) Check your connections before closing up! Make sure you don't have any tape interfering with the connectors or else you will experience issues with some of the features like the proximity sensors/light detector.

I'm disappointed, the case doesn't seems to be nicely built. The back panel cracked when I tried to slides it down to close it. Somehow there is a tiny plastic preventing me from closing, and with little force can actually cracked the panel.
The back panel cannot close fully due to the light panel is a bit thick. If you pressed hardly it will crack the glass and I have cracked mine during this process.
I received my kit yesterday and can't wait to get started on it. However it seems like a lot of the issues might be coming from the removal and replacement of the 2 sockets to tape down the wire, why not just place the wire between the two sockets, without having to remove them, and tape the z on the red wire to the connector? I don't think my phone sees that much harsh movement that would loosen that connection. This would eliminate that removal and replacement. Any reason why this wouldn't work other than keeping the wire in place? Might be worth it...
the mod is absolutely beautiful :)
but seems I've got a small issue with the light turning on by itself randomly sometimes without doing anything with the phone, how could that be happening? (I've got a iPhone 4)
seems i can't edit the previous post so ill just make a new one..
i forgot to mention that the light won't turn off when its plugged into a power source (like usb to computer or charging)
why isn't it turning off the light then?
I am also having a problem with the proximity sensor. I installed and removed to check but still having no proximity or light sensor. It's on a white iPhone 4. I also checked the 8 dots and they are intact. Please advise.
After the mod, the back cover does not close properly. It seems that the little square light is too bulky. I have tried lowering that position of the squared light, tucking the wires into the side of the phone, even selecting a different screw to connect the bronze cable. My main concern is dust getting into the phone.
Anyone else have this problem?
I got the mod working properly other than the fact that the light simply will not shut off. It's been more than ten minutes already since I closed everything up. The only thing I've noticed is that if I tighten down the screws on the plate too much the light turns of completely. I've read the above posts about the light simply being on whenever there is electricity running through it, but everyone else seems to have it turn off eventually. Does anyone have any advice about my situation? I'm on an iPhone4 GSM (AT&tT) model.
Another proximity sensor screwed here help or I want my money back. The phone sucks without the proximity sensor.
hi guys
I have a problem on my iphone 4 ... after mounting the kit I tested and everything is ok .... but as soon as I enter the pin code of the sim card and block the screen back light stays on forever : ( why it happens this?
I hope for your reply .
Thanks
